Ray Camacho & The Teardrops- "Si Si Puede"
Title
Ray Camacho & The Teardrops- "Si Si Puede"
Subject
Latin, Funk
Description
It's a stretch to consider this Fresno based band to be geographically part of East Bay, but Ray Camacho and the Teardrops (sometimes The Ray Camacho Group) were indelibly a corner stone of music on both sides of the Bay in the 60's and 70's. Able to smoothly weave themselves on to just about any show line up, The Teardrops appealed to black, white and Latin audiences where ever they went with a combination of funk, cumbia, Chicano salsa, rock and roll, soul, country and jazz. Ray Camacho could play with Tower of Power in Oakland one night, with Santana in San Francisco's Mission district the next, then head to L.A. to open for the Carpenters.
Ray Comacho was born in El Paso, TX (circa 1945) and raised in Mendota, CA. While still a teenager and working in the fields Ray became known as the most talented musician in the area and had people coming to his doorstep asking to join the band. Though he could play just about any instrument, he was most famous for the trumpet.
This track, "Si Si Puede" was released in the early 70's, likely 1970, as that is the earliest date I could find attached to it. Though this era was the heyday for the band there is very little available information on Ray Comacho and the Teardrops from this time. I read one account saying they played shows while under fire in Vietnam and another account saying "Si Si Peude" had become an unofficial anthem for the Chicano anti-war protesters in Los Angeles.
